Derek Butler

Director genome analysis and synthetic biology at BaseClear (Leiden, Netherlands)

Derek is responsible for the Genome analysis services, which are based on next generation sequencing technology at BaseClear. He also handles the Gene to Protein services together with a colleague. In addition to this, he works on a number of collaborative research projects with universities and research institutes the objective of which is to develop novel and more efficient DNA-related services.

Derek completed a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology at Dublin City University in 1995, specialising in Genetics and Immunology. He continued his studies at University College Cork and in 2001 received his PhD degree for work on the genetic regulation of lactic acid bacteria. In the same year he took up a post-doctoral position at the University of Groningen where his work focused on the identification of novel enzymatic activities from thermophilic bacteria. In 2004 Derek joined Lactrys (now Falco Biotherapeutics) where he worked on vaccine development in probiotic bacteria before joining BaseClear in 2006.

Dr. Christian Roghi

Self employed consultant

Having successfully carried research in a range of topics from Xenopus to Aspergilus to cancer, both in Europe and the US, Christian has more recently taken a keen interest in business. Having attained his MBA he has taken up a range of consultancy projects including recently working on the Digital media strategy for BIO Athena SWAN committee with Prof Tracey Chapman. Christians talk will focus on the pitfalls and need for managing your personal image in an increasingly fast paced and, some would say, superficial job market. The event is open to everyone on the NRP.

Christian obtained his PhD in 1993 from the University of Rennes I in France working on a Xenopus protein called Eg2, subsequently identified as AuroraA, a major regulator of mitosis and meiosis in human cells. The work earned Christian the award for best paper published in 1999 in Journal of Cell Sciences.

Following this he carried out his first post-doc in the Department of pharmacology of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (USA) in the lab of Prof Ronald Morris, identifying and elucidating the function of Dynein in the filamentous fungus Aspegillus nidulans.

Returning to Europe Christian obtained a Wellcome Travelling fellowship to continue my work on dynein and nuclear migration in the lab of Prof Vicki Allan in Manchester to continue this work.

Christian then came to Norwich in late 1999 to work with Prof. Gillian Murphy on protein trafficking as a system to regulate the expression of MT1-MMP, a transmembrane MMP involved in cell migration and invasion during cancer progression. This worked continued for the next decade in Norwich as well as at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the Cambridge Research Institute, in which time he had his own research group and recruited 3 scientists to work on the role of the aminopeptidase CD13 in tumour progression.

Returning to Norwich in 2010 to work with prof Dylan Edwards on ADAM15, a transmembrane metalloprotease involved in breast tumour progression. While working with Prof Edwards Christian enrolled in the part time executive MBA the Norwich Business School and a Diploma in management consulting at the Institute of consulting, graduating in April 2013.

Since November 2013, he has stopped lab work and now works as a self employed consultant, currently working on the Digital media strategy for BIO Athena SWAN committee with Prof Tracey Chapman.
